Managing the gag reflex is a critical component of effective dental care, especially during procedures involving oropharyngeal region stimulation. This table clinic presents a technique involving the placement of an acupuncture needle or endodontic K-file in the chin area to modulate the gag reflex, supported by anatomical insights and recent acupuncture research. Acupuncture studies demonstrate that stimulating CV-24 (Conception Vessel 24) at the chin can significantly reduce gagging by engaging neural pathways involved in gag reflex control. Research by Rosted et al. (2006) reported that acupuncture at CV-24 allowed 81% of patients to tolerate dental impressions, averaging a 53% reduction in gagging severity across procedures. Additionally, Daneshkazemi et al. (2016) highlighted acupuncture's role in triggering neurotransmitter release, such as serotonin and β-endorphins, which counteract the gag reflex through desensitization of the medullary reflex pathways. This method proposes a non-invasive, accessible approach to reducing gag reflex sensitivity, potentially enhancing patient comfort and treatment outcomes in endodontic care. Further investigation is needed to optimize K-file positioning and stimulation duration for maximal efficacy.
