EP-7 - Understanding the Terminal Dentition

I was once told that the terminial dentition defies simple definition, but 'if you've seen one, you'll know it'. In the climate of ready access to tooth replacement using dental implants, it is important to consider or reconsider what we consider a terminal dentition. Historically there is important and relevant information that places value to restored teeth with reduced periodontium. This presentation will consider factors that influence a clinician's and patient's perception of the 'terminal dentition'. The role of local factors, systemic factors and patient factors will be discussed in terms of how we value teeth and make decisions about the 'terminal' dentition. Comprehensive rehabilitations, complete dentures, and implant-based therapies will be explored. How we view the concept of a 'terminal' dentition is key to determining the oral and systemic health future of the patient.
