Minimally invasive endodontics has become the trending topic in root canal treatment. It encompasses clinical procedures that focus on removing less tooth structure during endodontic cavity preparation and root canal instrumentation while minimizing tooth structural alterations to facilitate post-treatment periapical healing and retention of the treated tooth. This lecture will discuss the post-treatment response of tooth structure to functional forces and the current evidence on minimally invasive approaches using conventional and newer non-surgical root canal treatment techniques to answer the question, "Are we maximizing success with minimally invasive endodontics?"

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the biomechanical response of a tooth that has undergone endodontic treatment when subjected to functional forces.
  • Differentiate between the various terminologies proposed to define minimally invasive techniques in endodontics from access to obturation.
  • Assess the advantages and limitations of these techniques based on current evidence and identify future trends that will allow for long-term retention of teeth in function.
