Objective: To identify clinically relevant factors that would allow clinicians to predict secondary outcomes of RET in terms of root development and apical closure.

Methods: Eligible subjects receiving RET at NYUCD from 2014-2020 who completed at least one 6-month follow-up were included (n=111). Data analysis is ongoing, with n=43 subjects completed to this date. Based on our last study, the time of initiation of RET in relation to the Age of Root Completion (ARC) was deemed significant in outcome determination. Thus, two cohorts of patients were investigated in this study: 1) patients who received RET prior to the ARC (n=23), and 2) patients treated after reaching the ARC (n=20). Outcomes were evaluated based on changes in root length, root area, and apical diameter. Moreover, the distribution of 5 types of responses to RET proposed by Chen et al. were analyzed in this larger sample size.

Results: Preliminary results indicate that if RET was performed prior to the ARC, there was greater potential for decrease in the size of apical diameter (p < 0.05), while the incidence of intracanal calcification or barrier formation was higher (p < 0.05). Although not significant, the increase in root length and area occurred more frequently in group one. Severe calcification of canal space (Chen Type IV) was the dominant response in group one, while continued root development with open apex (Chen Type III) was often encountered in group two.

Conclusion: Time of initiation of RET in relation to ARC is an important factor in determining secondary outcome of revascularization.
