US Army Endodontic Consultant to the Surgeon General

Dr. Joseph M. Dutner received his B.S. in Biology while attending Marquette University on an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship after which he received an educational delay and a Health Professions Scholarship to attend dental school. In 2006, he graduated with his D.M.D. from Temple University School of Dentistry, completed an AEGD 12-Month residency at Fort Benning, Georgia in 2007, and received his Endodontic Certificate from the US Army Advanced Dental Education Program in Endodontics at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 2011. In 2024, he earned his Master’s in Health Professions Education at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He has served as the Officer-in-Charge of
dental clinics in Mosul, Iraq; Fort Wainwright, Alaska; and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He has held full-time faculty positions at the Fort Benning and Joint Base Lewis-McChord AEGD 12-Month Programs and was the Assistant Program Director of the US Army Advanced Dental Education Program in Endodontics at Fort
Eisenhower (Gordon), Georgia before serving as its Program Director from 2018 - 2022. He is currently the Army Endodontic Consultant to The Surgeon General and the Secretary of the American Board of Endodontics (ABE). He has been awarded the prestigious Surgeon General's "A" Proficiency Designator. He is a Professor of
Endodontics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He and his wife Jackie live in Puyallup, Washington with their 3 children.
