Dr. Santos received his degree in Dentistry in 1995 and MSD in Experimental Pathology in 2000, from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, Portugal. In 2001 received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to perform an internship at the Department of Endodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto – Canada. In 2008 earned his PhD in Dentistry, specialty of Operative Dentistry and Endodontics with Summa Cum Laude.
Dr. Santos became Certified Member of the European Society of Endodontology in 2004, is International Member of the American Association of Endodontists, Member of the International Association of Dental Traumatology and runs a private practice focused on Endodontics in Aveiro, Portugal.
He his Associate Professor of Endodontics at the Faculty of Medicine - University of Coimbra (Pre-Graduation and Post-Graduation) and Departmental Coordinator for International Relations and mobility exchange programs for Dentistry. Supervised 3 doctoral theses and 35 master’s dissertations.
Dr. J. M. Santos published 44 original scientific articles in ISI journals and 5 book chapters (Scopus h-index 24), is member of the Editorial Boards of the Journals BMC Oral Health and Medicina (Lithuania), Scientific Advisory Boards of the Journal of Endodontics and Polymers, Review Editor for frontiers in Dental Medicine, and during the last years served as peer-reviewer for more than 50 different ISI Journals.
Main research interests are in the field of Dental biomaterials, Root canal instrumentation, Root canal filling, Pulp biology, Pulp regeneration, Stem Cells, Vital Pulp Therapy and Outcome of surgical and non-surgical endodontic treatment.
