(PR113) Exploring Selective Root Retreatment: A Survey on Prevalence, Perceptions, and Decision-Making in Endodontics

Objective: Selective root retreatment (SRR) is nonsurgical endodontic retreatment limited to roots with periapical pathosis, leaving unaffected roots untouched. This study aims to determine the prevalence, perception, and decision-making process of this practice among endodontists.

Methods: 4,158 members of the American Association of Endodontists were invited via the AAE Connection portal to complete an electronic survey. 291 responses were collected, with 2 excluded as they were not endodontists.

Results: Among the 289 endodontists, 16 reported that they have not performed Selective Root Retreatment (SRR) but are interested in learning more, and another 16 have not performed SRR and do not intend to start. Of the respondents, 257 (88.9%) have performed SRR, though 4 do not plan to continue the practice (n=257). Among those continuing SRR, 85 endodontists utilized the technique for 5-10 years, and 79 for more than 10 years. Furthermore, 237 endodontists (92.2%) who currently or previously practiced SRR reported using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) prior to all SRR cases, with 73.5% considering CBCT evaluation a major factor in their decision to perform SRR. Additionally, 86% of those who have practiced SRR believe their cases have had successful outcomes. Finally, 98.1% of respondents anticipate that the number of clinicians using SRR will remain the same or increase over the next 5 years.

Conclusion: Majority of endodontists are practicing selective root retreatment and consider CBCT evaluation a crucial factor in their decision-making process. Furthermore, most endodontists report successful outcomes with this practice.
