(PR152) The Healing Outcome of Apical Periodontitis Among Patients With Periapical Osteoperiostitis: An Observational Study

Objective - Periapical osteoperiostitis (PO) is an inflammatory response of the periosteum on the maxillary sinus floor resulting from infections in the maxillary posterior teeth. Radiographically, PO is identified by a radiopaque “halo” surrounding the affected root. A notable gap exists in the literature regarding the healing outcome of apical periodontitis in patients with PO, and this knowledge could be an important factor significantly impacting treatment planning in dental practice. The aim of this study is to evaluate the healing outcome of apical periodontitis in patients with PO. Methods - The cohort consisted of 98 patients with PO, who were identified in a prior study at NYUCD, where preoperative Cone-Beam CT Periapical Index (CBCTPAI) was measured. Of the 98 patients contacted, a total of 25 were followed up after dental treatment. Eleven patients were lost due to tooth extraction; therefore 14 patients were included. Two calibrated evaluators measured a new CBCTPAI. Healing outcomes were classified into two categories: healed/healing and not healed. Data was recorded in RedCap, and the preliminary data was analyzed. Results - The preliminary data shows that among the 14 included patients, 9 (64%) were classified as healed/healing, and 5 (36%) were categorized as failed. The median follow-up time was 4.4 years. Conclusion - Our findings reveal a low healing rate of apical periodontitis in these patients, which could have significant implications for treatment planning in dental practice. This is the first time the healing of PO has been reported.
