Dr. Smoczer joined the School of Dentistry in 2016 and teaches topics related to biochemistry, genetics and nutrition in the Biomedical Science courses to first year dental students. Additionally, she facilitates student seminars for the second- and fourth-year Evidence-based Dentistry courses.
She holds a medical degree and master of science from Romania, and a Ph.D. from University of Windsor, focusing on the gene regulatory networks involved in somitogenesis and eye development. She conducted postdoctoral research at Wayne State University in the areas of cardiac biochemistry and DNA damage during aging.
In addition to her didactic and research responsibilities, Dr. Smoczer serves on the School Research, Dental Curriculum, Dental Admissions committees and represents the Dental School on the IRB committee. She has also actively involved in national organizations, such as the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the American Dental Association (ADA).
